Isla Grande Terminal Improvements, Phase I: New LO/LO Pier and Berth Dredging
San Juan, PR
- Pile driving steel pipe piles up to 36” in diameter
- Driving 441 steel piles to support the new approach platform, pier and trestle
- Installation of a 427’ combination wall bulkhead consisting of 42 single H-piles, 20 double H-piles, and 60 sheet pile pairs
- Using a clamshell dredge, removed approximately 382,000 cubic yards of material
This project provided improvements to the Crowley Liner Services Isla Grande Terminal in order to support cargo loading operations. Manson’s portion of the project involved all the in-water work including the installation of a combination wall bulkhead, pile driving and berth dredging. The island of Puerto Rico has very limited heavy marine equipment such as large material barges, so in order to reduce cost, Manson loaded the deck of the derrick barge HAAKON with sectional barges to create two material barges once onsite. This eliminated the need to tow material barges to the jobsite and allowed the pile driving operations to operate continuously without delay.
