Project Description
The new Pierce County Terminal is the largest project ever completed at the Port of Tacoma and the largest single-container terminal north of Los Angeles. The work involved the rehabilitation and refurbishing of 1,400-feet of existing wharf and constructing 800-feet of new wharf.
The project began with the dredging and removal of 1.5 million cubic yards of sediment from the Blair Waterway Turning Basin. Next, work involved the selective demolition of the existing wharf structure for strengthening and the installation of a new 2,200 linear foot sheet pile bulkhead wall. The wharf is supported on 24-inch octagonal concrete piles with cast-in-place pile caps and precast concrete deck panels. Additional work included a new fender system and electrical and utility upgrades.
The project also involved a ten-acre environmental mitigation site that included the development of a shallow water intertidal fish habitat, featuring the installation of a 900-foot rock berm and the placement of fill to create a shallow water habitat at the mouth of the Blair Waterway.
