Replace U.S. Navy Berthing Piers 10 and 11

Owner
NAVFAC, Southwest
Contract Amount
$42,345,000
Location
San Diego, CA
Project Duration 07/2000-06/2003
Project Duration
The purpose of this design-build project was to demolish the existing Piers 10 & 11 and construct a single replacement berthing, logistics and maintenance pier. The work included dredging and removal of approximately 536,000 cubic yards of sediment, removal of unexploded ordnance, and the construction of a new pier with a concrete deck and fender system complete with power intensive utilities to accommodate Deep Draft Power Intensive ships.
The new pier is 120-feet-wide by 1,500-feet-long and is pile-supported on 24-inch octagonal concrete piling. The work included a fender system for ship berthing. Because the dredging work included unexploded ordnance removal from dredge material, 35,000 cubic yards of the material was unloaded to an upland facility where the material was screened and ordnance was removed prior to disposal.
Manson substantially completed this project eight months ahead of schedule and received an “Outstanding” performance evaluation.
