Project Description
The work on Berths 57 and 58 at the Oakland, Calif., container wharf consisted of construction of a concrete wharf and partial yard improvements. The project included 2,400,000 cubic yards of dredging and rock removal as well as 400,000 tons of rock slope protection.
The new wharf originally was designed to be 124-foot-by-3,000-foot but was extended by a change order to 3,600 feet. The wharf is supported by 48-inch diameter precast concrete cylinder piles up to 106 feet long, and 24-inch octagonal precast concrete piles up to 168 feet long.
Existing soils beneath the inshore side of the wharf were stabilized with cement deep soil mixing (CDSM). The wharf deck was constructed with a 2 foot cast-in-place slab. The wharf included 100-foot-gauge crane rails with an electrical power trench and a high energy absorbing fender system. The wharf was furnished with water service, electrical service, fire protection and high mast lights.
Additionally, dredge spoils from the project were used to create an upland fill area. Wick drains were installed in the fill followed by placement of a surcharge.
Evaluation
The Port of Oakland gave Manson Construction an “Outstanding” performance evaluation on the project.
