Project Description
This major deepening project consisted of several elements, beginning with the demolition of the Old Todd Shipyard and remnant timber piers, and removal of nine channel-crossing pipelines.
The dredging portion of the project involved removal of 8.8 million cubic yards of in-harbor sediment to deepen the channel to -53 mean lower low water (MLLW). The dredge materials were used to build three land fills, and three submerged fills. Containment dikes were built in the disposal areas with 3.5 million tons of rock.
In addition, 2.3 million cubic yards of existing Pier 400 surcharge were excavated and shipped to a submerged fill, and more than 1 million cubic yards
of dredge material were transferred within the project to surcharge the landfills.
The project was completed with the installation of 2.6 million linear feet of underwater and 13.5 million linear feet of under-surcharge wick drains. Also included were the installation and monitoring of geotechnical instruments.
