I-35W “St. Anthony Falls” Bridge
Customer:
Minnesota Department of Transportation
Location:
Minneapolis, MN
Contract Amount:
$265,590,000
Project Duration:
10/2007-09/2008
Project Description:
The purpose of this high-profile project was to replace the I-35W Bridge and open the new bridge to traffic within 15 months. Manson exceeded this goal and opened the bridge to traffic in 11 months. The project team coordinated an aggressive construction schedule in a congested, high-visibility urban transportation corridor. This project achieved Mn/DOT’s goals of safety, quality, and innovation.
The 1,216-foot-long bridge’s twin 504-foot-long main span is comprised of 120 precast concrete segments ranging from 11 feet to 25 feet tall, up to 16.5 feet long and weighing up to 200 tons each. Segments were cast on an existing closed section of I-35 and transported to the jobsite via truck and barge and then lifted and set in place with a large floating derrick. Each 90-foot-wide main span twin structure is comprised of precast concrete segments forming two box girders, supported on four 70-foot-tall curving piers on either side of the river.
The final product is a sustainable, redundant, high strength, high performance “smart bridge” equipped with vibrating wire strain gauges, accelerometers and chloride sensors that are embedded to monitor its anticipated 100-year service life. Innovations like low-energy LED highway lighting, the first of its kind in the United States, provide maintenance benefits for the future. Most important to Minnesota’s traveling public, the design incorporates multiple levels of protection and redundancy: there are no fracture-critical elements.
The Associated General Contractors of America named this project the “Most Significant Construction Job of 2008.”
