Customer:
Washington State Department of Transportation
Contract Amount:
$4,434,937
Location:
Orcas Island, WA
Project Duration:
05/2008-11/2008
Project Description:
This project involved replacing two timber floating dolphins at the Orcas Island Ferry Terminal with two new concrete floating dolphins. Manson began this project by setting up a floating casting facility on a barge at Manson’s Seattle yard on the Duwamish River. Manson fast-tracked this project by casting the dolphins simultaneously allowing for an early project delivery.
Each concrete dolphin is 80 feet by 40 feet and 14 feet deep and is portioned into 21 interior cells. The dolphins were cast on Manson’s barge in three main pours: the base, walls, and top deck. Manson also replaced the six anchors holding the existing timber dolphins with eight new concrete anchors. Manson cast these anchors at a concrete facility adjacent to Manson’s yard. The anchors ranged from 12 feet by 12 feet by 10 feet to 12 feet by 12 feet by 4 feet. Following the completion of the concrete casting operations, Manson towed each dolphin to Orcas Island and removed each existing dolphin and installed the new dolphins while still maintaining ferry terminal access.
